Chapter 12

Clearing off the table while Dasan started washing the dishes he brought over, Jalin smiled at his mate’s story. He loved that Dasan felt comfortable enough to share something about himself.

As much as Jalin wanted to do the same, he didn’t want to burden his mate. His life had been much harder. There were no funny stories. Hell, up until meeting Dasan, Jalin wasn’t sure he’d ever really laughed. At least not the deep belly laugh he’d been doing earlier.

His life had been mostly pain and tears. The only time he’d ever felt a modicum of happiness was in the depths of the ocean where he was free to just be. Even then, dark thoughts of his past would often catch up to him, nearly drowning him in despair.

So instead of sharing with his mate, Jalin silently picked up a towel to dry the dishes Dasan had washed. He knew it was cowardly, but he didn’t want to bring down his mate when he was in such a good mood.

He didn’t miss that the longer he was silent, so was Dasan. It was obvious the man was expecting Jalin to tell him something, but there wasn’t anything he could think of that wasn’t depressing.

When Dasan finished wiping down the sink and Jalin had put away the last of the dishes, he could see the questions burning in his Dasan’s eyes. Unable to think of anything else, he pulled his mate into his arms, kissing him until they were both breathless.

Desire replaced the questions in Dasan’s eyes, but Jalin could also see a hint of disappointment in those dark brown depths. Sighing in resignation, he placed his forehead against Dasan’s. “My stories aren’t like yours, Dasan. They’re ugly and hard.”

“Talking about my father is hard too, Jalin. We’re mates. We’re supposed to share our lives. This won’t work if we don’t do that.” Dasan softened his words by pressing his lips to Jalin’s for an all-too-brief moment.

Closing his eyes, Jalin didn’t know what to do. He was rapidly losing his heart to his mate, but reliving all those memories wasn’t something he was sure he could do. Knowing he had to try for his mate, Jalin gave Dasan a nod. “Okay, but can we climb into bed where I can hold you?”

He fell a little bit more in love with Dasan when he just took Jalin’s hand and led him into the bedroom, no questions asked. How he ended with someone so caring, Jalin wasn’t sure, but he wasn’t about to complain.

They both stripped down and climbed under the covers. As if knowing what Jalin needed, Dasan arranged them until they were lying side by side, touching from their chest to their toes. Those full, lush lips pressed against Jalin’s for a moment in encouragement.

Knowing it was better to just get it over with instead of lying here worrying about what Dasan would say, Jalin started talking about his time in the human labs and what they did to him. It was actually easier than he thought.
